How toxic is your sportswear?

Amphico's installation at the Performance Without Toxicity exhibition

A recent Financial Times feature examining the hidden chemicals in sportswear highlights a growing concern around the materials used in performance apparel and their potential impact on human health. Many synthetic fabrics rely on chemical treatments for properties such as stretch, odour control, water resistance and durability. However, some of these treatments, including PFAS and other additives, have raised concerns due to links with toxicity and their ability to interact with the skin.

The article also points to a wave of emerging innovation aimed at creating high-performance textiles without harmful chemistry. Amphico was featured as part of the Performance without Toxicity exhibition at Mills Fabrica in London, which showcases designers and material innovators working to develop safer alternatives.

At Amphico, this mission is central to our work. Our team is focused on eliminating hidden toxic chemistries from performance textiles while maintaining the functionality that athletes and outdoor users rely on. By developing PFAS-free materials and waterless colour technologies, we aim to prove that high performance does not have to come at the expense of human or environmental health.
